Barcode Asset Labels

Asset labels are useful for tracking internal stock items, or fixed assets such as electronic equipment, computers, photo copy machines etc during stock takes as well as movable assets. Assets that get checked out by employees and used off premises or perhaps assets that are taken with on business trips, this allows you to keep track of where all company equipment is at all times. The most commonly used barcode symbology for asset labels is Code 128, which allows you to assign a unique alphanumeric code for each item. For example you may assign one type of item an alphabetic code, say for example ACC for your accounts department, with a serialised number per item, ACC001 – ACC999. Code 128 barcodes are what we call a linear barcode as it is represented by the black and white vertical lines that we see in the images provided. It is a high density barcode and because if this they are very well suited for labelling and barcoding small items as well. This is why they are the chosen barcode format for asset tracking. This format of barcodes was invented in 1981 by Ted Williams of Laserlight Corporation to solve the problem of representing both alphabetic and numeric characters without sacrificing barcode density. The barcode is made up of many parts, starting with the quite zone which the the blank white before the black lines begin, the scanner will first pick up on this. The quite zone is then followed by the start character which will be the letters of your asset code, followed by the numbers that will represent your data, and then your check character and stop character, followed by the second quite zone. This may seem complicated but do not worry we sort this all out for you and provide your labels complete, printed and ready for use.

You can also use an existing numeric barcode format such as EAN-8 or UPC-12, which can be scanned by normal retail barcode scanners. (Note: these barcodes cannot be used for retail purposes) If you intend on using the barcodes for retail purposes as well you will be required to purchase an UPC-12 or EAN-13. These formats are specifically designed to be used on products in retail stores and will be the only formats that will be accepted. 

When using asset barcodes you can be rest assured that the possibility of errors occurring such as human error will be eliminated.  Barcode systems are able to store a large amount of data pertaining to your assets which in turn allows for you to keep a accurate and informative asset database at all times. When using asset bar coding a single barcode can hold up to 25 characters of your chosen information on the naming of each asset.
